What is linear displacement?

“Displacement” is when something moves from its original “place” and “linear” means a straight line

Therefore; “Linear Displacement” can be defined as movement of an object in a linear fashion along a single axis in a straight line, for example; from side to side or up and down. Linear Displacement can be measured by non-contacting sensors such as LVDTs as well as other linear position sensors.

Linear Displacement is usually measured in millimetres or inches and has a positive and negative direction.

Examples of linear displacement

Linear measurement is required within a broad range of applications to include:

  • Mobile Vehicle
  • Machine tools
  • Process and Packaging
  • Machine Presses
  • Automation
  • Suspension measurement & monitoring
  • Robotics
  • Agricultural machinery
  • Instrumentation and Test

All of these applications involve measuring the movement of something in a linear fashion, therefore measuring linear displacement.

Linear Position Sensors from Variohm

Linear displacement is measured by linear position sensors; we have a wide range of linear position sensors available. These can be found on our website and are broken down into categories;

Linear Position Sensors – this type includes our very own VLP range. Many of these are well used in Motorsport applications and other vehicle applications, as well as Aerospace and hydraulic applications. We can offer stroke range up to 50m and many of our sensors also have different levels of IP protection. See the individual datasheets for detailed specifications.

Non-Contacting Linear Position Sensors – this also includes our LVDT sensors. Many of these come from our trusted suppliers.

In-Cylinder Linear Position Sensors – these also offer touchless technology so have unlimited mechanical life, they are well suited to pneumatic applications.
