Sensors for use in the Packaging Industry

Sensors for use in the Packaging Industry

At Variohm we design, develop, manufacture and distribute a wide range of sensors for use within a variety of industries, one of which being the packaging industry.

As with many industries packaging equipment requires Sensors with a priority on high reliability and accuracy, especially because the industry is becoming far more automated.

Within the Packaging Industry, there are many different product types handled; food and drink, consumer goods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and many more. Some of these different sectors may require certifications for sensors to be used within the application.

Some examples of the machines used within this environment are;

  • Blister packaging Machines
  • Tube Filling Machines
  • Labelling Machines
  • Wrapping Machines
  • Bottle Filling Machines

Sensors used in the Packaging Industry

There are a huge array of sensors frequently used within the packaging industry, some of these are;

  • Rotary Encoders
  • Temperature Sensors
  • Linear & Rotary Transducers
  • Pressure Transducers and Switches
  • Load Cells

In our experience in working within this industry, we have frequently been approached for Rotary Encoders and Load Cells.

Encoders used within the Packaging Industry

Encoders are used for various positioning tasks and the detection of rotational movements throughout the packaging process for the following applications;

Conveyor speed - measuring the speed of the conveyor belt to ensure all processes can be carried out efficiently.

Packaging reel speed

Tension Control - on various parts of machinery throughout the process.

Marking process control- to successfully determine the position of product for marking/ labelling to take place.

Labelling control - ensuring the label reel is turning sufficiently and tension monitoring.

Printing process control - label feed rate monitoring and colour control.

Load Cells used within the Packaging Industry

Within packaging processes, there are many points when items will require weighing, to determine the weight of an item or to calculate if a box or package contains the correct amount of items.

Some of the applications which require load cells include;

Product Weighing - weighing the individual products.

Batch Weighing - used to speed up and automate counting.

Pallet Weighing - weighing the items once they are fully packed and ready to be shipped.
