What is a Proximity Sensor?

A proximity sensor is a type of position sensor and part of our product portfolio.

Our proximity sensors come from our sister company Phoenix America and are magnetic proximity sensors.

A proximity sensor is a type of non-contacting position sensor. They are used to detect the presence or absence of objects. They are perfect for use with sensitive and delicate objects and materials as they are completely non-contacting so will not damage any devices.

They can provide a high-speed response and are suitable for use in various types of applications.

What is a Proximity Switch?

A proximity switch is like a proximity sensor, they sense whether the object is present or not but then the results will trigger the switch which will open or close an electrical circuit.

Types of Proximity Sensors

There are various types of proximity sensors available, they are.

  • Capacitive Proximity Sensors
  • Inductive Proximity Sensors
  • Magnetic Proximity Sensors

Magnetic Proximity Sensors and Switches

The range of proximity sensors we offer are magnetic proximity sensors and switches. They are used to detect ferromagnetic objects and use large sensing ranges to be able to do this. They are perfect for low-cost, long-range applications and are small in size so can fit into tight spaces. They are high-speed which makes them well suited to rotational velocity application.

When using a magnetic proximity sensor or switch, the target object will have to be a magnetic metal to be able to be detected.

Advantages of Proximity Sensors

There are many advantages of using a proximity sensor and in particular, a magnetic proximity sensor;

  • Highly precise
  • Programmable options
  • Cost-effective
  • Long-range
  • Small in size

Where are Proximity Sensors Used?

Proximity Sensors are used throughout different industries, in any application where object detection is required. Some examples are;

  • Transportation industry
  • Inspection and quality applications
  • Process and control applications
  • Food and beverage industry
  • Agriculture applications

When using a magnetic proximity sensor in any application it is important to consider that the sensitivity of the sensor suits the environment, the target type is a magnetic metal, the IP rating suits the application and consider the sensing range.
