Sponne School is a secondary school in Towcester Northamptonshire, they are geographically very close to the Variohm Eurosensor office. Sponne School recently hosted an event for their year 10 students and invited local businesses to come and talk to the pupils. Emma Pochodzaj our Admin Manager attended the event.

The year 10 students had just completed their 2 weeks work experience; this was a follow up from what they had learned and how they could get to where they want to go in their careers. Visitors from various businesses were stationed round the room and two to three students were visiting each business at a time, the students then moved tables every 7 minutes so that they had a chance to talk to each business. There were three sessions in total and each session was one hour long so Emma spoke to a lot of students. The students attending the event were able to ask questions about working and careers, these are some of the questions Emma was asked.

·         What do you do?

·         Do you enjoy your job?

·         Why did you decide to do this job?

·         If I could give them any advice what would it be?

·         If I was talking to my 15 year old self what would I say?

Emma says: “One of the things I said to them is it is ok to not know what you want to do for the rest of your life, as long as you are willing to work hard, sometimes you fall into a role and then learn to love what you are doing. I explained to them that I did not attend university but instead studied whilst I was working as that worked best for me, university was not the right path for me and I didn’t want to start something that I felt I wouldn’t be able to finish. I consider myself successful in the career I have built so far. There are always options and you should always think outside the box.”

Apprenticeships

A few students who Emma spoke to were interested in engineering and Emma recommended Apprenticeships. At Variohm we have offered Apprenticeships for a few years now and they have really worked well for us, our first intake have recently completed their qualifications. Emma explained to the students that if they were thinking of going down this route then they should keep us in mind and contact us closer to the time to discuss options.

Overall Emma had a great time at Sponne School career event. Giving careers advice is important as it contributes to the next generation of people in the working environment. Having a representative from Variohm meant that we could give a different perspective on Engineering careers, we hope we have inspired people to look into careers in Engineering and consider us in the future.
