Jacob Upton has been working at Variohm Eurosensor for 2 years. In August 2018 he won the AMI Manufacturing Apprentice award.
Over the past few years we have offered a few Engineering Apprenticeships. Nathan and Jordan were our first two Engineering Apprentices, they completed their studies earlier this year. Jacob is due to complete his qualification within the next few months.
Jacob started working in our production department before moving into our Engineering department. This has enabled him to gain the product knowledge first hand along with the methods used to manufacture and modify our products.
Jacob has been interested in Engineering from a young age; he talks about his journey into the field “I have always been interested in Engineering. I started watching TV programs such as ‘How it’s made’ which made me even more interested. I then decided that I would go and do some work experience so I could see the day to day life of an Engineer, which I did, and that was what confirmed to me that I wanted to pursue a career in Engineering.”
Offering training to our employees is a regular occurrence here at Variohm. We have found it is the best way for our employees to get the most from their job roles and it helps to keep us as a company up to date with the industry.
Jacob is positive about his decision to become an apprentice at Variohm, he says; “I am extremely happy that I got the chance to join Variohm Eurosensor as an apprentice. It has been great fun working with such a supportive team, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. A few of my friends have chosen to do apprenticeships too, and they all agree with me that it’s a great route to get into the career you want. I would highly recommend an apprenticeship to anyone, as it gives you valuable experience in the industry you’ve chosen. As well as experience, you are also able to gain qualifications that open more doors for you to progress.”

The AMI Manufacturing Apprentice Awards has been launched to identify and recognise the very best apprentices within the UK. Winning the August award has also meant that Jacob has been entered for the AMI UK Manufacturing Apprentice of the year award too – finger crossed. Jacob says “It feels fantastic to know that all of my effort has been recognised. I believe I have worked hard both at college and at work, so to receive some form of reward and recognition from outside of the company is great.”
