National Apprenticeship Week

This week is national apprenticeship week so we are sharing a story about our apprentices past and present.

National Apprenticeship Week celebrates apprenticeships and the positive impact that they have on employees, businesses and the economy.

Apprentices at Variohm

Here at Variohm, we have Jacob who is an Engineering Apprentice and Nathan and Jordan who joined the team as Engineering Apprentices and are still with the company today.

All three of our Engineering Apprentices started working in our production department before moving over to Engineering during their qualification. This gives them the experience of building the products so that they have a deep level of understanding to help them with their studies.

Jacob, our Engineering Apprentice started working for Variohm in 2016. In 2018 he was nominated for the AMI Engineering Awards and won the August round. You can read more about this award here.

Jacob was able to visit our sister company Herga Technology in 2018 to oversee the takeover of a Variohm product. He says “Another part of being in Engineering that I enjoy is the opportunity to visit our sister companies. I have just been to Herga which allowed me to see how our other companies work and gave me a good insight as to what they’re capable of.”

Nathan and Jordan joined the team as Engineering Apprentices in 2014 and completed their apprenticeships in February 2018. They are now continuing to study and are working towards a HND in Mechanical Engineering whilst working at Variohm; they attend college one day a week. During their time at Variohm so far they have also been able to visit our sister company Herga Technology and played a big part in the design of the Innovation Pod back in 2016, this also helped them to complete tasks for the NVQ they were studying at the time.

As well as work based experiences Nathan and Jordan have embarked on some of their own challenges. In 2017 the engineering department took on the National 3 peaks challenge to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK-read the full story. This challenge also included Manufacturing Manager Richard and Production Engineer Zahan.

Richard has been working for Variohm since 2012 and is Jacob, Nathan and Jordan’s manager. He has worked with them through their qualifications. He says “I am a firm believer in personal development, and we have been fortunate enough to find a team of people who have outperformed any expectations I may have had.  I hope we can continue to provide the platform and career opportunities for them to continue to learn their craft over the coming years.”
