A Linear Potentiometer is a type of position sensor. A Potentiometer is a contacting technology, they contain a slider with connected wipers which move long a conductive resistive track, causing variable resistance. The distance the wipers travel will cause more or less resistance. the distance is calculated based on the proportional output produced.
Potentiometers are also available as rotary sensors to measuring rotary displacement. We also have a range of these – take a look at our Rotary Potentiometers
Potentiometers are a type of contacting sensor, the internal parts have to physically touch for them to work. Our potentiometers used conductive plastic technology which is the most widely used type. They use cats claw configurated elastomer damped wipers to ensure long life in harsh conditions.
Linear Potentiometers are used for applications where short to mid length distances require measuring. They are very versatile and are a very cost-effective solution for linear position measurement.
Some example application areas are;
At Variohm we supply linear potentiometers into all of the above industries and have done for many years.
Linear potentiometers are just one of the many types of linear position sensor available for use on the market today.
Some of the main reasons for choosing a linear potentiometer are;
For applications with a longer measurement range, a cable extension transducer or string pot may be used. They are cable actuated making them suitable for longer ranges whilst still using potentiometer principles.
Our potentiometers have been designed and developed with customer applications in mind. They have unique features to ensure they have long life even in harsh conditions.
Features of our linear potentiometers include;
