RTD sensors are a type of temperature sensor. RTD stands for “Resistance Temperature Detector” they measure temperature by determining resistance.
RTDs are available with different temperature / resistance values depending on the application requirement.
An RTD consists of a resistance element (temperature sensing element) and insulated copper wires. Platinum is usually used as the resistive element material for a number of reasons; it is highly stable over time, it has a wide temperature range, it has a chemical inertness, and it offers an almost linear relationship between temperature and resistance. Other popular choices are Nickle or Copper.
An RTD uses a basic principle; as the temperature of a metal increases, so does the electrical resistance. An electrical current is passed through the sensor, the resistance element measures the resistance in Ohms. The resistance value can then be converted and directly correlates into temperature based on the characteristics of the element.
There are slightly different principles based on the number of wires the RTD has – find out more in our blog post “RTDs; 2 wire, 3 wire and 4 wire – what’s the difference?”
RTDs are widely used in various applications. they are often selected based on the following characteristics:
As they have high accuracy and stability RTDs are used in areas such as
We have been supplying RTD sensors to a wide range of industries for many years. Our own ERTD2 range are durable and suitable for applications where long-term stability, interchangeability and accuracy are important.
Our RTDs are shown above. For more information on our RTD sensor or any of the components we can offer please contact us: 01327 351004 or [email protected]
