Load Cell Basics

Load cells and force sensors form part of our product range at Variohm. Load cells are a type of sensor which are used to measure force, weight, and load. They take the weight measurement and convert this into an electrical signal.

They are available in many different forms, types and configurations. Each different type of load cell has various features which make it better suited to applications in certain areas.

Load Cell Basic Working Principle

Load cells work using internal strain gauges. The strain gauges are bonded to the internal diaphragm of the load cell and have electric currents running through them. When the load cell is under any force or strain, the strain gauge shape will alter causing a change in the electric resistance and therefore causing a change in output.

The change in output can be directly related to the force, load or weight the load cell is measuring. This signal can then be processed within wider machinery and devices.

Different Types of Load Cells

Because the requirement for measuring load and force is present in many different areas and applications, there are many different types of load cell available on the market today. Some of these are;

Single Point Load Cells – these are the most common type of load cells, they are often used for all different types of scales; food scales, truck scales, hopper scales, belt scales etc. they are well suited to applications like this because they can accept off-centre loads.

Tension and Compression Load Cells – this type of load cell can also be referred to as a canister load cell or compression load cell. They can carry and measure extremely heavy loads. They are often used for applications such as electronic weighing devices, industrial scales and track scales.

S-Type Load Cells – S-Type load cells give excellent performance in both tension and compression applications. They offer high endurance, compact designs, making them well suited to applications where space may be limited.

Shear Beam and Bending Beam Load Cells – These types of load cells have a low-profile construction and are often integrated into applications in restrictive areas. They are a very cost-effective type of load cell and are suitable for harsh environments.

Other types of load cells are;

  • Pancake load cells
  • Onboard load cells
  • Miniature load cells
  • Subminiature load cells

Applications for Load Cells

Load cells can be used for any application where weighing is involved. Some applications include;

  • Various types of scales
  • Weighbridges
  • Medical equipment
  • On-board weighing applications
  • Tipper trucks
  • Electrical transmission cables
  • Forklifts
