HVAC Sensors

HVAC is an acronym for Heating, Ventilation and Airconditioning, an industry that commonly use sensors to provide thermal comfort.

This is an industry that has grown over the years following people’s higher expectations of comfort whilst indoors. The required technology has expanded and with this, so has the demand for sensors within environmental comfort systems.

There are many types of sensors used within this growing industry, found within the various demanding applications. The most commonly found sensors within this industry are; temperature sensors, pressure sensors and humidity sensors.

HVAC Sensors – Temperature Sensors

Temperature sensors are one of the most obvious sensors used within HVAC as they are used to monitor the temperature within the heating and cooling systems.

To work effectively in this environment, temperature sensors must be highly robust as they will often encounter dirt and moisture. They are used to monitor ambient temperature as well as monitoring the temperatures in various liquids and gases within the systems.

Temperature sensors used within HVAC applications include:

  • RTDs
  • Thermistors
  • Digital Sensors
  • Temperature Probes
  • Temperature Transducers

HVAC Sensors - Pressure Sensors

Within HVAC, pressure sensors can be used to measure either pressure in gases or liquid level. As with temperature sensors, they must also be extremely robust to work in this industry effectively.

Pressure sensors are used to ensure the system is working efficiently. They measure the airflow and pressure throughout the system and ensure these are correct for air distribution.

Pressure sensors used within this environment must have the following features:

  • Hermetically sealed ports
  • Ability to work within high vibration environments
  • High accuracy
  • Variohm pressure ranges
  • Long life

HVAC Sensors – Humidity Sensors

Humidity sensors are used widely within the HVAC industry as condensation is commonly present within these systems. A humidity sensor will be used to monitor the level of condensation within humidification or dehumidification aspects of the system.

Humidity sensors are designed for harsh industries and demanding applications. They are small, making them suitable for areas where space can be restricted.

HVAC Sensors – Position Sensors

Position sensors are also used within areas of HVAC. There is a range of different technologies available to ensure that there is a sensor suitable for the application at hand. They are a highly reliable solution for use in the HVAC industry.
