A load cell is a type of sensor used for measuring load, weight, force or strain. They are one of our popular categories of products as they are well used throughout many industries.
A load cell converts the load or force into an electrical signal so that it can be processed by different devices depending on the application.

Load cells are available in different shapes and sizes which makes them suitable for different applications and different industries. The different types available from Variohm include;
Single point Load Cells - the most common type of load cell suitable for weighing many different matters, from sugar to dynamite. Single point load cells are very versatile.
S-Type Load Cells - take their name from their shape, well suited to hanging scales and tank weighing. Primarily for mechanical to electronic scale conversions.
Bending Beam Load Cells - suitable for tension and compression loading and applications including electronic weighing equipment and platform scales.
Compression Load Cells - designed for heavier loads. Most load cells fall into this category, the measure compression forces.
Shear Beam Load Cells - are designed for applications including low profile scales, hopper scales and other weighing devices.
Dual Shear Beam Load Cells - suitable for truck scales and other heavy weighing devices. They offer high accuracy and are often sealed to IP67.
Pancake Load Cells - another type of load cell taking their name from their shape - pancake load cells are round and flat. They often have a low profile and measure tension and compression offering excellent accuracy.
Onboard Load Cells - specifically for on-board weighing applications; tipper truck weighing, forklift scales, bulk haulage, front loader scales etc.
Miniature Load Cells - these work on the same principles as full-sized load cells but are miniature in size - some as small as a 1-euro cent coin.

We have been supplying load cells for many years and have helped to solve some interesting applications as well as more common and well-known applications. The most common applications we are approached for regularly are; Onboard weighing (tipper truck weighing) and platform scales.
One of our most interesting and unusual applications we were able to solve was detecting the force of the needle on a record player when playing records, different forces applied to the needle would result in a different sound being produced so a load cell was used to monitor this.
